Holiday Party – Winter

When children are born with a disability, or later for some reason become disabled, parents are devastated and feel they have nowhere to turn to.  But those who join OCTD see others in similar situations and instantaneously get bonded towards each other.  Due to this common factor, there is a close connection among the members, which gives them self-confidence and a sense of belonging which in turn helps them to overcome some of the fears and uncertainties they face in their lives.

As we celebrate our December Holidays, some people with disabilities are unfortunately excluded from these celebrations due to their disabilities. OCTD is an organization that was formed to embrace all members to provide comradeship and enhance self-confidence.

Each year, we celebrate the “holiday party” during winter season.  We receive gifts from ‘Chum City’ for children who have disabilities and children of parents who are with disabilities. We distribute gifts to all intellectually challenged individuals irrespective of age.  Everyone, however challenging his or her situation may be,is given an opportunity to actively participate in the event.  It is unique.  The hard of hearing are able to dance while visually impaired are able to sing and all participate and enjoy having fun without being excluded.  Not only for the members, but it is an outlet for parents and caregivers too.  They enjoy the music, dance and socialize with other parents.

Park Party - Summer

Like other organizations, OCTD organizes a get-together in the summer to enable people with disabilities to participate at all levels in various activities and enjoy the day with sumptuous food.  The highlight of this party is the sports event.  They face many challenges, yet each member according to their strength and ability are able to partake in sports and receive prizes and medals that are awarded at the end of the event.

Social outings are an important component of our program.  This type of event provides an awesome opportunity for families and children to network and socialize in a fun loving and comfortable setting.  By sharing time together as this, it improves the quality of life for all of those involved by creating support for each other.  Individual challenges are hidden beneath a spirit of fun and laughter that shines through them all day long.

There are many events planned to suite all types of disabilities such as wheel chair sports, games for visually impaired, and intellectually challenged members.  When speaking of able-bodied children, they are able to take part practically in all events that satisfies them physically and emotionally.  This is not so with children with disabilities.  Unfortunately, these children from their tender age are left out due to their limitations.  When they join OCTD, the vacuum that had been created and had remained for many years is filled.

Cultural Show

Among all the programs, most anticipated and crowd-drawer is the cultural show presented by the ’(dis) ability on stage’, featuring some of the organizations most talented children, youth and adult artists.  This provides a platform to showcase their abilities, and an opportunity for the community to see their talents and gain a deeper understanding of the members of our Organization.

Tradition and modern-age-thinking blend well in Canada that is fittingly portrayed in our Organization. Forms of entertainment are classical music, dance, drama, debates and the age-old ‘villu-paatu’.  During the show, there are unbelievable breathtaking moments;  humorous dramas by the hearing impaired that make the audience burst into laughter.

Not only we must be seen and heard but also be recognized for the abilities that do exist among the people with disabilities.  This is the main object of having these public cultural programs, so that we can connect with the public and eventually merge with the mainstream.  The cultural programs are unique where the artists are mainly persons with disabilities; hence our shows should not be missed by the community we live in,  as they are the backbone of our organization.

Walkathon

Walkathon is a platform to bring together people from different walks of life, including people with disabilities, and creating an awareness of feeling of oneness. This is also an opportunity to build strong bondage between the ‘abled’ and ‘disabled’ and empowering us to hold hands and proudly walk through the streets of Scarborough for the noble cause we all believe in.

Creating awareness and sensitizing people about the cause is essential. Nevertheless, besides creating awareness , walkathon also acts as a fundraising platform for our Organization.

This event gives people with disability, their families and caregivers, the opportunity to meet one another, to share their stories and to be reassured that they are not alone.  It helps them to move from disability to possibility.  We can succeed only with the community’s encouragement, love and commitment.  We strongly believe that the success of Walkathon is in the hands of people like you supporting a virtuous cause and showing solidarity.

In this diverse city, we are happy to maintain ‘ALL For One & One for ALL’ motto.
