Our History:
“Organization of Canadian Tamils’ with Disabilities” (OCTD) is a Not-for-profit organization founded in 1997. It is worthy to mention that it is the first disability organization established among the Tamil community in Canada.
It was founded by 8 members of the challenged community, with a vision of providing a unified voice to Canadian Tamils with disabilities and to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues within the Tamil community.
OCTD has been a catalyst for a change in the attitudes and we are optimistic as we see positive changes in terms of how the public views us, compared from the time of founding our organization. It is all about dis-mantling ‘dis-abilities’; knocking down stigmas; while building bridges to connect people. Our membership has grown to more than one hundred over the past years. They are persons with varying degrees of physical and/or mental challenges living mostly in the GTA.
எங்களைப்பற்றி:
எங்களது இந்த இலாப- நோக்கற்ற “கனேடிய தமிழர் வலுவளர் அமைப்பு” 1997ல் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது. கனேடிய தமிழர் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளது ஏகோபித்த குரலாக நாம் ஒலிக்கின்றோம். மாற்றுத்திறன் கொண்ட கனேடிய தமிழருக்கு விழிப்புணர்வைத் தூண்டுவதும், அதே நேரத்தில் அவர்களிற்கு இது தொடர்பான பூரண புரிதலை ஏற்படுத்துவதும் இந்த அமைப்பின் தலையாய நோக்கமாகும்.
கனேடிய தமிழ் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளிற்காக கனேடிய மண்ணில் தோன்றிய முதலாவது அமைப்பு எங்களுடையதே. இதை ஆரம்பித்த காலத்திலிருந்தே குறைபாடுள்ளவர்கள் என்று எங்கள் மீது பதித்த முத்திரையை நீக்குவதில் வெற்றி கண்டுள்ளோம் மேலும் பொதுமக்களும் எங்களுடன் இணைந்து செயலாற்றுகின்றார்கள். எங்கள் அங்கத்தவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை நூறைத்தாண்டி வளர்ந்து வருகின்றது. இவர்களில் பெரும் பான்மையானோர் ரொறன்ரோ பெருநகரில் வசிப்பவர்களாகும். இவர்களிற்குள் மறைந்திருக்கும் பல்தரப்பட்ட ஆற்றல்களை எங்களது அமைப்பு இனங்கண்டு வெளிக்கொணர்ந்து அவற்றை வளர்க்கத் தூண்டுதலாக அமைந்துள்ளது.
